Week 47 – 2018
International School of Stavanger
4. and 5. Grade
Do you like hiking? Do you enjoy being outdoors? If you answered yes, then Gullingen leirskule is the place for you!
During our week at Gullingen, we’ve had many outdoor adventures. We also learned about important Norwegian traditions, folktales, and holiday customs.
On the arrival day, we had a nice hike in the forest around Gullingen, Playing Gullingen-special Hide and Seek, and sloping on ice. We also learned about some of the ever-green plants here. At the end of the trip, we cut down our own Christmas-tree. We found both pine and fir.
The Monday evening hike in the mountains at night with nearly a full moon and some star patterns, was extremely exciting. We even tried to walk in the forest without the flashlights on. We then understood that the night wasn’t dark at all, due to the moonlight, reflecting our own shadows on the ground. In the end of the night-walk, we came down to a cabin called “Bålstova” and the Grill house. There we light the campfire in the middle of the cabin. We heard a “Hulder”-tale and other stories. The traditional rice-porridge was also tested as the supper that evening.
Tuesday was the Fishing-day. We then went down to the big lake Mosvatnet, learned how to put up a lap-tent, and each group pulled one fishing-net. It was a bit cold, but when the sun came round the Gullingen peak, we got all warm again. There were some Brown Trout in them, and we learned a lot about the life of the fish, how to gut the fishes, and how to cook them in Tin foil in the Campfire. It tasted great, and the best part of it was; we did it ourselves!!
In the afternoon we had the Christmas Work-shops, where we baked Norwegian Christmas-Cookies, and made a Barn-“Nisse”.
The weather on Wednesday morning was quite beautiful, with nearly no wind at all, and a all sunny sky. This day was the Mountain-peak hiking day. All of the groups went to a nice peak, way above the Tree-limit. A great experience! Some of the groups saw a mountain Hare, or a Stout. The had put their winter-camouflage on, but with now snow at all they were easy to spot. We also tried the Cake on a stick with cinnamon and sugar, yummy At the end of the day we made the Gullingen Pin, a puzzle made of a Juniper branch and a string.
The last evening we had a Christmas party, with Norwegian traditional Christmas food. Great! Afterwards we tasted the Christmas-cookies we baked ourselves. It tasted great.
Thursday was the packing and cleaning day. And at the end we had a summary of the week. And wow, did we learn a lot this week!
If you are lucky enough to be a part of Gullingen Leirskule, there will be great adventures waiting for you. We would love to come back to Gullingen Leirskule!
